About the project
mima26 is a project born out of passion. It focuses on the interaction between craft and design where the imprint of the artist’s hand and the imperfections that result from the creative process are valued and appreciated. Moreover, it is a space that is open to new artisans and makers who are involved in producing pieces, books or products, mostly in small series as an antidote to mass production. Mainly, the products embody a simple, honest approach to design that combines long lasting values with an aesthetic and useful sense. It favors Portuguese local craftsmanship and products created with natural and eco-friendly materials. It aims for everyday classics, destined to improve with age and to become favorites for a lifetime.
The project identifies Portuguese craft ancestral techniques to re-interpret the result handmade products or make use of the technique to project new ones, making them appropriate in a traditional or contemporary environment. It values their cultural context and works with the artisans, while it aims to revitalize the craft through the search of current solutions. Since most objects are crafted using traditional techniques, variations in color and design give each piece its uniqueness.
The earlier Portuguese artisans’ craft was not a job but an inherent part of their lifestyle that I greatly respect since a young age. Not only have I learned and investigated some of these crafts techniques in the past but I also have been using some of these handmade objects ever since. These craft skills are part of our intangible Portuguese cultural heritage, which this unpretentious project aims to make a small contribution towards their preservation. I want to share this rich experience with you.
